considered themselves as true patriots were forming tighter groups than ever before. Militias in all fifty states had begun seeing their numbers increase and Kelly should know - he had accounts online in all of these groups and personally agreed with everything that was being said about the POTUS he protected. Gun sales, especially of certain types of rifles, had sent gun manufacturers into a backlog they might never be able to completely fill.
The above was mainly because Sotereo was instrumental in a new attempt to ban private ownership of guns. At the moment the push was on to ban what was considered "assault rifles", meaning such rifles as the AR-15, the precursor to the M-16, even though the AR-15 was only a semi-automatic weapon and didn't work on full auto. That was part of the problem - most Americans believed the hype they were fed by the federal government and promoted by the government-controlled media - that the AR-15 and all other weapons like it were fully automatic. They weren't, but mister and missus Average Citizen in the US weren't aware of this. They believed whatever they were told like good like puppets and had little initiative to truly study the information they were being spoon fed.
Kelly was fortunate in that he had served in the military and understood what a true "assault rifle" was. Almost no one within the United States owned a true assault rifle and of those who might, well, they didn't come by it through legal channels.
No, the United States Federal Government wasn't concerned with ridding the nation of assault weapons, but of removing all guns of every type from the hands of American citizens. Many were falling for the hype and turning their guns in through the buyback programs many cities and states had initiated, but fortunately there were still a lot of people in this nation who knew the truth and were doing their best to educate the masses. Not that it was likely to work well enough. The majority of Americans were sheep being led astray by a false shepherd and Kelly knew that only too well. He watched the war on guns, which to him and many more like him across America was the war on the Second Amendment, which provided that "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed".
Yes, that was what POTUS and those linked together with him were working towards, to subvert the Constitution of the United States of America and the Bill of Rights. Kelly had begun understanding it more and more over the course of the final year of this President's first term in office and now that Sotereo had been elected for his second term in office it seemed as though he was no longer hiding anything. If something wasn't done to stop this madman soon he would succeed in his push to disarm America or start another Revolutionary War in the process. Patriots were not standing still for what was happening, though it was made more difficult by the fact that even with all that was happening in America the majority of its citizens still were blind to the truth of what was happening.
Kelly saw what was coming more along the lines of a new Civil War than a Revolutionary War. True, it would be fought as a revolution, but it would be Americans against Americans and that to him was exactly what a Civil War was all about and there was nothing "civil" about it.
He walked into the office that was set aside within the White House for the Secret Service detail protecting the President and poured himself a cup of coffee. His only cup while on duty during the day, since any more would tend to make him have to piss too much. His superiors within the Service wouldn't care to have an agent guarding POTUS having to make too many trips to the can during his shift. Kelly was glad that like his father before him, he had been born with a strong bladder.
Other agents were either in the room already or entered after him. They engaged in idle small talk a few minutes and then went in to their usual briefing wherein they were informed of anything important that might affect their jobs there at the White House as well as the itinerary of what was happening within this federal capitol, mostly as it applied to POTUS.
"Kelly," the AIG called out his name and Kelly looked up straight into the face of his main superior. "You're on-point."
Kelly allowed the corners of his lips to turn up just barely when he heard those words. They meant that he was to be at the POTUS' side throughout the day. The only time he would leave the side of POTUS was when he was in the Oval Office or any other closed meeting wherein no one not privy to the information being bantered about was welcome. At times such as that he would be standing right outside the door leading into those rooms where the POTUS was. As soon as POTUS exited the room Kelly would once again be stuck to him like he was glued to POTUS' ass.
This was the assignment he'd been waiting many days to receive. Lead Agent on-point with POTUS. There was no higher duty within the entirety of the Service than the one he had been given that day and he was determined to make every second of it count for all it was worth.
No one else in the room with him at this shift briefing could know what was going through Kelly's mind at that exact moment. He could never let anyone know or not only would he be relieved of duty, he'd be kicked out of the Service entirely and most likely spend the rest of his days in a maximum security prison cell. He'd be lucky if his mother was allowed to visit him every once in a while. Certainly his father would never come to see him, not if he was caught before he could complete the task he had decided upon as the only course of action that would - hopefully - prevent this nation from going to war within itself.
Kelly left the briefing and went to the President's bedroom. He waited outside the bedroom door, as was the custom of the Service until POTUS exited. The door eventually opened and Kelly glanced to his left to see the man he had been waiting for coming out.
"Mr. President," Kelly nodded his head toward the slightly-built man stepping out of the bedroom of the most powerful man in America.
"Ah, Agent Kelly," Barry Sotereo smiled as he extended his hand. The two men shook briefly and no other words were spoken. Kelly followed POTUS down the hall and waited as the Man in his charge paused for a cup of coffee and a pastry, chit-chatting with a few key personnel on his staff on his way to the Oval Office. Eventually they reached the President's main office and POTUS vanished through the door while Kelly took up his position outside that same door.
Shortly thereafter more politicians arrived, some of them with their own Secret Service agents in-tow. One of these was the VEEP and Kelly felt his heartbeat increase. This was indeed his lucky day. If all worked out to his benefit he would make events right in America in a way that would be even better than he had originally expected to make them.
The agents assigned to VEEP that day took up their own positions in the anteroom, though they refrained from more than the minimal amount of small talk between them. They all knew too-well the rules of their duties called for them to remain constantly alert to the smallest infraction that might mean danger to any of those they guarded.
Slightly more than an hour elapsed before the door to the Oval Office opened from the inside and those who had been meeting with the President began to file through. Kelly's heart rate increased once more and he fought hard to still it. He had to remain calm at this point. An elevated heart rate could cause specific changes to his outer facial expressions that might alert one or more of the other agents nearby. That was something he simply could not afford. Not now. Not this close to him being the savior of the American People. The thought flashed across his mind that he would be recorded in the history books as neither a hero nor a savior, but as a villain, right along with John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald. The name of Daniel Norman Kelly would forever be stamped as the most evil of men of the twenty-first century, but that was something he couldn't help. Those who were like him and held his views would understand. He would be labeled a racist and a murderer, an assassin, for certain, but the ones who agreed with his own views would know him as the Great Patriot.
When Kelly realized that the only person still in the Oval Office with POTUS was VEEP he nodded almost imperceptibly to himself. Yes. This was the way it had to be. In this man
ner he would rid the world of not only the most evil dictator-to-be of the entire history of the United States, but the idiot clown who would unfortunately take his place and bring this country down in a much different way were he to be allowed to assume the position of President of the United States.
This was the way to do it. Take them both out at once. Then the Speaker of the House would be the next in line in succession.
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants," Kelly barely whispered the words he knew only too well, those that had been spoken and penned by none other than Thomas Jefferson, one of the Founding Fathers of America and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. He had also been the third President of the United States and had himself served two terms in that office. Back then it had truly been an elegant and prestigious office to hold. Now the office of the President had become smudged, had been besmirched by those who had held it most recently. The POS in that office now was the worst, the most treasonous of all those who had filled this position and was deserving of only one thing, that which Thomas Jefferson
